About Us

The Wild Animal Centre is owned and managed by Sarah and Chris Potter, who are both members of ABWAK (Association of British Wild Animal Keepers). It is a family run business based in Derbyshire.

The Wild Animal Centre was established in 2006 and the business and private collection of animals has been getting better and bigger ever since!

The Wild Animal Centre is a private animal collection, which contains over 100 animals, including: snakes, lizards, porcupines, raccoons, meerkats, skunks, hutias, coatis, lemurs, rabbits and poultry!

Some of the animals at the collection are rescued. Sarah and Chris rescue and rehome numerous unwanted animals. Everything from snakes to skunks! Some animals have a home for life at the centre, some are rehomed to knowledgeable, permanent homes.

As well as rescuing animals, some of the animals in the collection come from other private and public animal collections. New premises were purchased in 2011, providing more space for new animals, which shall steadily arrive over the next few years,

Sarah and Chris have a passion for animals and working with them is not only their job, but their life. They are surrounded by their animals 24-7.

The aims of The Wild Animal Centre are:

  • To educate the public about our animals in the wild and the diverse wildlife our planet has to offer

  • To promote awareness of man-made threats to the wild; such as deforestation and illegal poaching. We explain what the public can do to help protect the the animals and their natural habitats for the future

  • To provide the public with an interactive, memorable, fun encounter with our animals. We believe a positive encounter with an animal can lead to a greater respect and love for the species

  • To manage a captive breeding programme with some of our more 'exotic' animals

  • To provide the highest possible standards of animal welfare and care we can, both at home and out on visits

  • To learn as much as we can about our animals' captive husbandry and behaviour, whilst the species are in our care
